When your computer is idle, Backup sends your files off to an FTP server that you specify. You can backup as few or as many directories as you choose, and you may even backup entire hard drives. A setup program is included, which allows you to specify the FTP server you wish to connect to. The setup program also lets you choose which drives and directories you wish to have backed up. When you install Backup, it installs in two portions. The first portion is the Backup service. You can control how the Backup service runs by opening Services, usually from the Administrative Tools control panel, and opening the properties for the Backup service. Note that you may need to restart your computer in order for the service to be active. The second portion is the Backup setup application. When you run the setup application from the start menu, you will see two tabs. The first tab allows you to enter the information needed to access your FTP server. The second tab contains a list of directories you wish to backup, along with options to add or remove directories from that list. Once you have setup the directories you wish to backup, the Backup service will wait for two minutes of idle activity before beginning the backup process. It runs at low priority, so any applications running will not be adversely affected by the service. The service will first check the backup location to see if the file and directory structure has changed, removing files and directories that you no longer have locally. Once it's done, it will then begin backing up your files and directories, refreshing any that have been modified since they were last backed up. In all, the process can take anywhere from seconds to hours depending on your connection speed and the total size of the files you wish to backup.
